The High Dive
A motion graphic created using motion capture of Nick McCrory’s platform dive, captured by the team at Manhattan MoCap, to analyze the hive dive, and highlight the differences between what the judges see, and what the diver is actually doing to create the perfect impression. For the NYT R&D team, I created a model of the volume Nick carves through space, resulting in this abstract particle flow which we then 3D printed. In the resulting shape, we can clearly see each of his three rotations, as well as where he separated his arms before entering the water.
