The Modern Games
A New York Times Virtual Reality (NYT VR) project that invites you to travel through time to some of the most unforgettable moments in Olympic history.
Visit this page to learn how to view the project.
Created in collaboration with VFX and content studio The Mill, we used thousands of photographs from our archives to allow readers to witness the instant Olympic greats made history.
Olympic historian David Goldblatt lends his expertise and narrates the film, giving insight into each moment.
The project also includes exclusive interviews with icons like Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Bob Beamon, and Richard Thompson, as well as with Tony Duffy, the photographer who captured the world renowned photo of Beamon as he made his Olympic record long jump that still stands today.
Simon Romero, Times Bureau Chief in Rio, gives a portrait of the games to come, and the state of the city.
